TERMILAT SCHOOL PROJECT

For our senior project, we decided to help a nearby school called Tarmilat. This school is in critical condition which is one of the main reasons as to why we chose it. This school lacks of hygiene necessities and educational equipment. We divided our tasks so that each one of us had a specific goal and target to have done by the end of the year. Nouhaila took the responsibility over looking into building bathrooms. We are also looking into the possibility of building waterless bathrooms, but we are not sure we have to required things for that. Oumnia took the responsibility of providing us with the necessary equipment to build walls for the bathroom stalls, with the help of her father’s company. Zainab is taking over the fixing of windows and making them rain/cold weather- proof, as well as providing the classroom with furniture for books, a little library with the help of Salma. Marouane is providing the Tarmilat school with a solar panel, donated to us by his father. We are in the process of finding effective ways to build bathrooms and make them sanitary, and the rest is being taken care of.

SOLAR PANEL

Marouane El Bouji - April 2018

Marouane went to install a solar panel, so the classroom will have electricity.

On the 23rd of April, I visited the school with a technician to take the proper measurements and the necessary materials to start working. After a couple of days, I called the teacher in charge of the school that day, and we set a time to start the work because we didn’t want to halt the student’s class time. We left Ifrane with all the equipment and we arrived at the Tarmilat School around 12 A.M. We bought a motor which was connected to a battery for electricity and then we placed the solar panel on the wall for security reasons and also it’s placement to the sun. The pictures are provided below for more understanding. The people nearby were very happy and some of the guys were gentle enough to help us set the panel. They were very welcoming and very supportive of our work in addition to that; they brought us tea and melwi. It took us about 4 hours to finish setting that panel and installing the battery inside the classroom. Our work was successfully done and the students were very satisfied with having light again. I am very happy and glad of doing such work inside this kind of environment and I am also looking forward to complete the other tasks by the Senior Class students to put a smile on these little kids. We want to create a safe and convenient environment for these kids to study, and we are working very hard to complete our goal.

WINDOWS, DOOR & FLAG

Zainab Berriane - April 2018

Zaineb went to Termilat School and fixed broken windows, repaired the door, and put the Moroccan flag on the schools' wall.

NO TOILETS, BUT A DRY WALL

May 2018

After two month of research the students working for Termilat School decided, that unfortunately it will not be possible to build new toilets. Fatima-Zahra checked with a construction worker and found out, that the connection to the water is the main challenge, that we are not able to solve. We researched opportunities to build waterless toilets and found many interesting projects, that realize this idea. Our Senior class will not be able to face such a big challenge, but we will instead make sure, that the wall of the classroom will be well isolated, so that no water can enter the classroom in the future.

FIXING THE ROOF AND THE WET WALL

Oumnia Bassam - May 2018

After agreeing with my classmates that we want to do some community service for our senior project, we decided to focus on the Tarmilat school. We started by organizing several events to collect the money needed for the work. After that, we chose the tasks we want to take care of and started working. I first wanted to take care of building the bathrooms. However, the school had no water which is very necessary for the bathrooms to be efficient.  Therefore, we made some modifications in our program. Instead of building bathrooms, we decided to fix the walls and roof of the school because each time it rains water would leak. I took this as my task and looked for a professional to do the work. After finding the worker, I communicated with him and was told that he cannot work until the walls are fully dry. Because of the bad weather conditions in Ifrane, I was unable to realize the task for weeks. Therefore, I decided to get a second opinion to see if there is any other possible way to fix the water leaking walls and roof. That is when I asked my classmate to ask the painter she knows if he can do such work. After asking him, the painter said that fixing leaking walls and roofs are part of his profession. He also said that if he takes care of the work he will be able to finish it in 1 day. Fortunately, the day after was a very sunny day which allowed him to start the work. He eventually fixed the water leakage the next and is currently working on painting the school from the outside and the inside.
